Mel: Models of London for KALTBLUT Magazine By Karl Slater

This week Models of London take the time to get to know high fashion model Mel, Signed to Select Models.  In this short informal interview he talks us though his love of tracksuits, dance and his guilty pleasure..  Dominoes cookies.

Name: Mel / Age: 18 / Birthplace: London / Agency: Select / Category: High Fashion.

How were you discovered: I was an extra on a television series (Suspects, Channel 5) and the person in charge of most of the admin was a mother agent. He said I had a great look and he took me round a few agencies in London. I felt the most comfortable at Select.

What has been the high light to you career so far: Working with a large clan of farmyard animals on a shoot. Having a load of squealing creatures running about constantly needing attention and care makes us models feel less lonely on the shoot.

Whats the funniest thing a clients asked you to do: To clean up the set after the goose i was holding defecated all over the green screen. The client believed that the way i was walking with it made it do this. Never heard anything so ridiculous in my life.

Whats your dream booking: Fred Perry - have always been totally bent over backwards in love with every bit of clothing that comes from them. Its my Victoria's Secret equivalent for female models, but if i were a female model I would still want a Perry job!

Who's your favourite fashion icon: Russell Brand - because he became one without any intention to be.

Whats the best piece of advice you were ever given: To place yourself in the shoes of everyone of the crew you are working with.

What item of clothing could you not live without: My tracksuit bottoms. They require very little maintenance and are the most socially acceptable way to wear one's pyjamas everywhere.

How do you keep fit: I'm a dancer (originally practiced street dance but since i started taking it more seriously i've been very much immersed in classical ballet and contemporary dance). Its a fantastic way to exercise as i couldn't think of a more enjoyable form. It's also nice to know that there's more purpose in this exercise than slavin away on the machines in the gym just so you can slave away on those machines to greater extent the next day. The dance is the priority and any other benefit is a bonus.

Whats you favourite food: Was Dominoes cookies but now i've been told by various fashion-eesters that i shouldn't be eating that sort of stuff so now I reluctantly prefer smoked salmon with scrambled egg, fresh rocket salad and brown bread......

What was the last music track you listened to: Dexter Gordon - Love for sale.

What do you do to let your hair down: If there be a good line-up at fabric then i very much enjoy heading there to cut loose for a bit.

If you were an animal what would you be: Any kind of bird. The thought of flying never gets any more dull.

David: Models of London for KALTBLUT Magazine By Karl Slater

David Signed to Body London and maybe the hunkiest model to be featured. Still being a “New face” we believe David has a bright future ahead of him and we cant wait to see him go from strength to strength. In this interview we get to know him a little better and what makes him tick.

Name: David / Age: 25 / Birthplace: A small town in Cumbria that you've probably never heard of /Agency: Body London  / Category: Fashion

How were you discovered: I met my agent on my first ever night out in London. I was inquiring about getting a job at this nightclub and we connected, exchanged details, and the rest is history. It's been madness ever since.

What has been the high light to your career so far: Ah man, there's honestly been so many. I don't think it could be fair to pick only one. I just keep my head down and work hard-- i'll have time to tell stories when I'm retired on a yacht somewhere in south Italy maybe!

Whats the funniest thing a clients asked you to: I did this post-apocalyptic shoot in New York a few years back. The concept and execution was brilliant but i was meant to shoot with a dreadlock wig on. Having always wanted dreadlocks, I thought, 'Brilliant! Now's my chance.' Boy, was I wrong. It looked so unnatural that we decided to drop the wig and make my hair nappy. I think I'll leave the dreads to the Rastafarians.

Whats your dream booking and why: Too many to choose just one. Adidas, Marks and Spencer, Nike, Dolce & Gabanna, the list goes on. To be honest though, my dream is to get into acting so my first full length film will be my real dream booking.

Who's your favourite fashion icon and why: David Gandy. He paved the way for guys like me to be in fashion and that, alone, makes me respect him immensely. Before Gandy, it was unheard of for muscular guys to be in fashion. The man is a legend.

Whats the best piece of advice you were ever given: 'When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.' -Eric Thomas

What item of clothing could you not live without and why: Anyone who knows me will groan at this but it has to be said. My light blue All Blacks rugby shorts. I once spent an entire summer wearing them, literally, every day. Judge me.

How do you keep fit: Coming from a heavy Rugby background, I'm a weights kind of guy, through and through, so I lift 5-6 days a week. No cardio though... (I hope my agent isn't reading this!)

Whats you favourite food: This changes quite frequently but, right now, it's got to be Thai food. A dish called Pad Kee Mao (or 'drunken noodles'), in particular, has my heart. Anyone who needs a Thai food sidekick, I'm always ready.

What was the last music track you listened too: I'm more of a Hardcore and Folk guy but, right now, I am rocking the shit out of Sia - Elastic Heart. Amazing song and the music video is unreal too. Shia Labeouf is killing it!

What do you do to let your hair down: I have a big music and film background. I've played drums and guitar in loads of bands over the past ten years and did the whole LA-based music management thing and then studied film in uni so I love to write music or watch a good film. You can't go wrong with either, I reckon.

Whats the best thing about being you: I think my best attribute is that I'm very accepting of anyone. I don't care what walk of life you come from-- if you're a good person, we'll crack on.

If you were an animal what would you be and why: I feel like i would be a sort of hybrid, because I have two very different sides to me-- one that is very dignified and another that is very cheeky. So I'd be a mix between a lion and a monkey...a Mion...a Lonkey.

Conor : Models of London for KALTBLUT Magazine By Karl Slater

This Week we cant get enough of Conor Skilbeck, signed to D1 Models. Best known for his beautiful long hair and his relaxed 90’s persona. If you read fashion publications such as Dazed & Confused, Arena Homme and Wonderland you might of spotted Conor modelling in high fashion editorials. With this being said we think Conor has everything it takes to be a huge start of the future and thats why we made him this weeks Model of London.

Name: Conor Skilbeck / Age: 21 / Birthplace: Newcastle, Australia / Agency: D1 / Category: Fashion

How were you discovered: I was scouted when I was 14, just two doors up from my house in East London. It was a bit unexpected, I had my head phones in and just assumed someone wanted the time, it was a bit of a shock when they started talking about modelling.

What has been the high light to you career so far: I think probably the most fun I have had was doing a show for Puma at there head office in Germany.  It had a bit of everything, dancers, pro skateboarders, and a really impressive skipping group. All in all it was a fun couple of days. Also being scouted outside Topshop on Oxford street, which had been a personal ambition of mine since I started modelling.

Whats the funniest thing a clients asked you to: I have been to a few bizarre castings over the years. I have been asked to act like I'm swinging on a chandelier,  to do something surprising (which I was terrible at. In retrospect I should of walked out of the casting which I am sure would of been somewhat of a surprise, but unfortunately I only thought of that on my way back home), and probably funniest of all, to dance in just my boxers while being filmed. Safe to say its one of the more awkward things i have ever done and it wasn't helped by the fact I had no idea I was going to have to do anything remotely like that prior to the casting.

Whats your dream booking: I would say a Calvin Klein underwear campaign. Who doesn't want to plastered everywhere in just their boxers.

Who's your favourite fashion icon: To be honest I don't really follow fashion in that way. I couldn't name an icon who I look to for fashion advice. I would just say that I spend an inappropriate amount of time asking my friends and girlfriend if I look good in something, what they think about the fit of my jeans and which coloured coat I should wear.

Whats the best piece of advice you were ever given: Don't drink and drive, don't smoke and fly. Two sage bits of advice from a loving cousin. Unfortunately i haven't learn to drive of fly yet, so i haven't been able to follow them.

What item of clothing could you not live without: Well all of its pretty important. If i was only allowed one, for dignities sake it would have to be underwear. But I imagine that not quiet the answer you were looking for. If hard pressed i would say my pair of black Nike Janoski's, they go with anything, and in my opinion look pretty good.

How do you keep fit: I have been rock climbing since i was 11, and is probably the reason I'm not even weaker and un-athletic than i already am. I also play a lot of football, but I play in goal so i suppose that doesn't really count.

Whats you favourite food: Its impossible to choose! If pushed i would say thai, but i cant be anymore specific than that, its all so good, especially the starters. Also waffles.

What was the last music track you listened too: I am big into disco, so the last song I listened to was the new CHIC track, i'll be there. I was reasonably impressed. It wont make it into my list if favourite songs ever, but if it came on in a club i would throw some serious shapes.

What do you do to let your hair down: Several things, but probably most relaxing is dancing inappropriately in my kitchen, which includes spending ages trying to learn to moonwalk. Seeing as its pretty easy to see in, I'm sure my neighbours think i am pretty weird, and awful at dancing.

Whats the best thing about being you: I dont think there is anything especially special about me apart from my ability to make a damn fine christmas dinner, but I am privileged enough to live with some great people (and Eric) and have a lovely and beautiful girlfriend (I hope she sees this so i can get some browny points!).

If you were an animal what would you be: I have had this discussion with my housemates regularly, which often ends pretty heated. I always go house cat. Its the perfect life, you can sleep all you want, there is easy access to all the food you need, a warm house and all the attention you want.

KALTBLUT Magazine | ONE TO WATCH: SHADE By Karl Slater

Fashion labels are popping up every were.. so its not often you see one standing out from the crowd. That was until SHADE came along! With a strong distinctive energy that epitomises the core of East London style and attitude. SHADE is pegged to be a big name of the future. KALTBLUT magazine was lucky enough to meet the creator of the brand Matthew Wade, for this short and informal interview about what inspires, motivates and the future of this über cool fashion led streetwear brand SHADE.

KALTBLUT: What’s your inspiration behind your current collection?

SHADE: Well SHADE London’s inspiration starting point is always ‘über graphic streetwear’, we love bold, body conscious looks made from plush fabrics. But in particular with this collection we were inspired by early 90s club culture, house music and late night raves. We wanted something that seemed authentic, versatile pieces that gave an essence of the era but were also timeless in a way. Iconic

KALTBLUT: Who would you most like to see wearing your clothes?

SHADE: Everyone! people just out and about enjoying themselves and doing there own thing. Putting their own spin on an outfit and feeling confident in expressing themselves.

KALTBLUT: Who's your favourite fashion icon and why?

SHADE: Fashion icon is a bit of an uncomfortable label for me to place on someone, I’m very much a nostalgia freak and naturally drawn to style that denotes a certain period or essence of a time. Famous women who I am generally inspired by are the likes of old school Janet Jackson, Sinead O’Connor, Madonna, Left Eye and Rihanna if considering someone of today.

KALTBLUT: Whats the best piece of advice you were ever given?

SHADE: Don’t sweat the small stuff, if it doesn’t matter in a 1 month it doesn’t matter.

KALTBLUT: Tell us about your journey that lead you to this point.

SHADE: Well I’ve had a label of some kind since I was 17, cutting up cheap curtains and making them into mini dresses to sell on eBay during the holidays. I did this throughout university as a way of earning money and gained a lot of confidence in my abilities to successfully create something an audience would respond well to. Then after university I decided I wanted to expand outside of eBay and create a label that had a point of view and a following all of its own. So while interning for other fashion related businesses I ignited the beginning of SHADE London with a couple t-shirt and sweatshirt designs marketing solely on social media, it became successful pretty much instantly and 3 years on we’ve expanded and I haven’t looked back since.

KALTBLUT: Why did you become a designer?

SHADE: I never went to design school or trained formally in pattern cutting, grading etc. so I don’t really deem myself as a designer. I feel creative director is probably a better title to give myself and I think the reason why I feel most comfortable in that role is because I like being the overall visionary of the brand. I think it’s so important to keep your aesthetic consistent and narrate a cohesive story for customers in order to relate and speak to them in some way.

KALTBLUT: Whats the best thing about being Matthew Wade?

SHADE: Flexibility, control of your own destiny, travelling and parties.

KALTBLUT: What do you do to let your hair down?

SHADE: Probably go out and get too drunk with friends.

KALTBLUT: What does the future hold for SHADE?

SHADE: New website, more collections, new ranges of products, collaborations, new stockists and more. Watch out!

KALTBLUT: What was the Last Music track you listened too?

SHADE: Let the Funk Flow - James Brown

KALTBLUT: What item of clothing could you not live without and why?

SHADE: Probably my black huaraches or bomber jacket.

Marko Mitanovski AW15/16 – BACKSTAGE | KALTBLUT Magazine by Karl Slater

London Fashion week: Day 5. I got invited backstage at the Marko Mitanovski AW15 Show. His elaborate and striking creations are more obviously inspired by nature, birds and reptile skeletons but further subtly influenced by architecture and historical costumes originating from the Renaissance and Victorian era, showcasing his potential, creativity and depth of knowledge he processes for subjects out side of fashion.
Marko Mitanovski’s Autumn/Winter 2015 collection will stay true to the designers trademark avant-garde elegance, with the evident absorption of the outside world flowing through the new creations as the stimulation for a truly groundbreaking show.
